Jesus goes back and forth between His disciples and the Pharisees…..addressing them, and trying to teach His disciples not to be like the Pharisees, and in fact teaching them to be everything the Pharisees are not…..and when Jesus is talking to His disciples, the Pharisees are listening in, and when He is talking to the Pharisees, the disciples are listening in……
Defining characteristic for the Pharisees is pride, and the defining characteristic is humility.  Four things the Lord says in this section……you are to restrain from offending others…….you are to be ready to forgive….you are to recognize your weakness…..you are to reject honor as unworthy servants……
1 Peter 5:5-6 “In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders.  All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud, but shows favor to the humble.”  Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time.”
Proverbs 3:34 “He mocks proud mockers, but shows favor to the humble and oppressed.”
Proverbs 18:12 “Before destruction a man’s heart is haughty, but humility comes before honor.”
Philippians 2:5-8  “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, Who being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be qual with God., but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men, and being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, event the death of the cross.”

Luke 17:1-4 “Then He said to the disciples, ‘It is impossible that no offenses should come, but woe to him through whom they do come!
